Career Opportunities at Sherman & Sherman

Career opportunities are available at Sherman & Sherman for a lawyer who is interested in private law practice and has exhibited an extraordinary interest and outstanding competence in fields of law practice, such as corporation law, commercial law, taxation law, investment law, labor law, maritime law and civil litigation.

Like most business enterprises, lawyers at Sherman & Sherman are employed on a hierarchical basis beginning with Research Assistant, which is often an outstanding law student in his final year of law school or a law school graduate awaiting admission to the Bar. Once a newly graduated lawyer is admitted to the Bar, he could be employed as a Staff Counsel at Sherman & Sherman. Upon admission to the Bar, the lawyer's designation in the legal community is Attorney-At-Law, authorized to practice law before administrative agencies and all courts below the Supreme Court.

Elevation from the position of Staff Counsel at Sherman & Sherman depends on admission to the Supreme Court Bar as a Counselor-At-Law. An Attorney-At-Law is eligible to sit to the Supreme Court Bar examinations after he has practiced law for three years. The newly admitted Counselor-At-Law may get the designation of Senior Staff Counsel; the next higher position is Assistant Counsel, and following that, is Senior Assistant Counsel.

After Senior Assistant Counsel, the next higher position is Associate Counsel; and the final position is Senior Associate Counsel. A Senior Associate Counsel is the highest position that an employee of the firm may aspire to.

The position of Senior Consulting Counsel is the highest position at Sherman & Sherman; but it is reserved only for one who was Managing Director and upon retirement from that position. The next position is Managing Director and immediately below the Managing Director is the position of Senior Counsel. These three positions are however reserved for only partners (members) of the firm.

Some of the firm's clients have their principal businesses outside of Monrovia (the place where the firm's head office is located). For such clients, in agreement with the firm, the firm may designate a resident legal counsel, who is an employee of the firm, but works almost exclusively for that client. On the other hand, instead of a resident legal counsel, the firm may retain the services of an Of Counsel, who associate with the firm on a continuous basis, assisting the firm with management of the client's legal portfolio in that part of the country where the client has its principal business and where the Of Counsel normally maintains his law practice. The Of Counsel is not an employee of Sherman & Sherman; he works under contract with Sherman & Sherman for the client.

No other Liberian law firm has such personnel structure for its staff lawyers. Information about the availability of employment at Sherman & Sherman may be obtained from the Managing Director; but interested persons should be aware that only Liberian citizens may practice law in Liberia.
